The Friday Focus 31/07/15

I wasn’t expecting the mid-week trip to hospital for a heart check-up on Jessica after she had low oxygen saturation levels during our routine monthly community nurse visit. Things have been so stable for so long, that it has almost lulled me into a false sense of security – most of the time life ticks along quite nicely and we enjoy a “normal” family life – but when something happens that raises a concern, all those little worries that I push to the back of my mind resurface and leave me feeling anxious and unsettled.

It was a huge relief when the heart check-up showed that Jessica’s heart function still appears to be fine and her sats were back up to more normal levels for her. We’re still awaiting the results of the chest X-ray but these are not expected to show anything of concern and our consultant is happy to continue with the current plan to monitor Jessica and hold off on any intervention until at least next year at the moment. Hopefully it was just a blip but it was a sharp reminder that whilst Jessica is stable at present, at some point her current circulation will start to struggle with the demands placed on it as she grows.

Both the girls got a certificate for being so good at the hospital – Jessica for standing so still during her chest X-ray and Sophie for being so good whilst waiting for her sister to have her X-ray done. I’m always so proud of how well Jessica copes with all the poking and prodding during her check-ups – the only thing she really gets upset about is when the ECG stickers have to be removed from her chest as no matter how gently we try to remove them, it still hurts to have it done.

Unexpected hospital appointments aside, it’s been a good week on the whole – settling in to being back home again after our lovely holiday on the Isle of Man last week. We finished off our holiday with another trip to Bristol to find the last of the Shaun the Sheep sculptures and catch up with one of my close friends who I haven’t seen since Sophie was a few weeks old. It has been lovely to have so much family time together, particularly as hubby heads off to Germany today and will be away for ten days working on an event.

I have loved following your journey round the postboxes and then the Shauns. There are some Owls in Birmingham at the minute and I am tempted to take a trip there to see how many I can find – especially after seeing all of your wonderful photos =)

    1. Thanks Jenni – love the sound of the Owls in Birmingham – if we lived nearer we would be tempted to try that one too! 🙂

    1. It was a fun week overall although the trip to the hospital did feel like it dominated it all – once that was over, I could relax again!

  6. Glad that all’s OK, though very unsettling just as things seem to be going smoothly. Both girls are just adorable, and well deserved those certificates, I’m sure. Hope next week’s more predictable for you, especially while you’re parenting alone x Thanks for sharing with #WotW x

    1. Thanks Jocelyn, spending it with my sister and nieces so not having to cope on my own which is always good! 🙂

  7. Ah poor Jessica! Thank goodness everything is ok! She sounds like such a special little girl, it’s awful to see them in any kind of pain & it must be so worrying for you. I’m glad you got to find another Shaun & the Peppa certificate from the hospital is so lovely! #HappyDays x

    1. Thanks Merlinda, removing the ECG stickers is always the worst part as far as Jessica is concerned.

  8. Gosh, how scary that must have been for you Louise. I guess it’s easy to slip into the ‘everything is fine’ mindset when things have been good for so long. I’m glad all is OK with Sophie though and she was such a brave girl at the hospital. Love the little certificates. 🙂
