A look back through the years

17/03/201528/03/2017

My arrival in the world was quite a surprise for my mum. She only discovered that she was having twins after my sister was born and the midwife said “hang on a minute, there’s another one!” I love the fact that every time my mum tells this story, she also says that it was the… Read More

From tardy to timely: 5 tips which improved my timekeeping

10/03/201506/04/2017
A finger pointing to the time on a wristwatch

I’m someone who hates being late for things. Yet since having children, my timekeeping abilities have completely gone to pot. Despite having every intention of leaving home on time, it always seems something happens at the last minute to make me late.   Small children are unpredictable – that’s my excuse. There’s the inevitable poo explosion… Read More

Me and You – February: Revisiting our marriage vows

21/02/201526/02/2015

My soppy hubby wanted us to sit as a family on Valentine’s Day and watch our wedding DVD together. It’s something we usually do in July on our wedding anniversary and I love reliving the pure joy of that day but this was the first time in a while that I really paid attention to… Read More

To us on the day we became heart parents

To us on the day we became heart parents - Little Hearts, Big Love

I see you sitting there in that scan room. Cold with fear and the terrible realisation that something is wrong, very wrong with your baby’s heart. I see you clinging to each other. Neither wants to voice the terrible thought that fills both your minds – that your child will die. I see your tears,… Read More

Think HEART: the signs that your baby may have a heart defect

07/02/201521/10/2017
An infographic summarising the different signs that your baby might have a heart defect. H - heart rate (too fast or too slow?) E - energy (sleepy, quiet or falling asleep during feeding?) A - appearance (pale, waxy, dusky, blue or grey skin colour?), R - respiration (too fast or too slow?) and T - temperature (cold to touch - especially hands and feet?)

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) affect approximately 1% of all babies.  Around a third of these are detected during pregnancy and another third during the standard newborn checks that are carried out in babies born in hospital before they go home. This means however that around 1 in 3 babies with a CHD will go home… Read More

The challenge of hospitality

03/02/201513/02/2015

We’ve all been there. The phone call from a friend or a family member who happens to be in the local area and thinks oh wouldn’t it be nice to just pop in and say hello. And yes, of course, that would be absolutely lovely. Except that you’re looking around at the state of your… Read More

Breastfeeding acrobatics

27/01/201513/02/2015

Breastfeeding when you’re a teeny tiny baby seems to be a very relaxing experience. Snuggled up close to mummy, listening to the soothing sound of her heartbeat, getting milky drunk and finally drifting off into blissful sleep… Breastfeeding when you’re a toddler is very different. For a start, there’s more of a self-service element –… Read More
