Think HEART: the signs that your baby may have a heart defect

07/02/201521/10/2017
An infographic summarising the different signs that your baby might have a heart defect. H - heart rate (too fast or too slow?) E - energy (sleepy, quiet or falling asleep during feeding?) A - appearance (pale, waxy, dusky, blue or grey skin colour?), R - respiration (too fast or too slow?) and T - temperature (cold to touch - especially hands and feet?)

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) affect approximately 1% of all babies.  Around a third of these are detected during pregnancy and another third during the standard newborn checks that are carried out in babies born in hospital before they go home. From the heart

05/02/201514/06/2015

Our journey as a heart family has been very much at the forefront of my mind recently. Jessica had her cardiac check-up last week and whilst her heart function is currently looking good, the team are now starting to consider her next major surgery and when this is likely to take place. It would be… Read More

The Friday Focus – 30/01/15

30/01/201513/02/2015

This week has been a bit of a mixed one on the whole. There have been good moments, fun moments, grumpy moments, tired moments and anxious moments all thrown in together. We had Jessica’s cardiac check-up yesterday and whilst we are thankful that her heart function is currently good and things are fairly stable, we… Read More

Tiny Tickers – Heart Week 7th-14th February

26/01/201501/06/2016

February – a month that is all about hearts. Hearts, flowers, chocolates, Valentine’s cards. For me as a mummy to a child with a complex congenital heart defect (CHD), February also has added significance with regards to hearts as it is National Heart Month, with Heart Week taking place from 7th-14th February. Since my daughter… Read More

Preparing for preschool with a heart child

15/01/201519/07/2017
A preschool bag and jumper

Last week saw a big milestone for Jessica as she started preschool for the first time. She took it all in her stride and seems to be thoroughly enjoying it so far. However, it was a big step for me as a parent too. Going from having her home all the time to letting her… Read More

Heart to Heart – January 2015

15/01/201519/07/2017
A heart with the text "Heart to Heart" on one side and a picture of hands making a heart over a child's chest with the text "A linky for sharing posts about CHD"

This month has seen a significant milestone for my little heart warrior as she started preschool for the first time and I am so proud at how well she is doing. It has been quite an involved process getting her prepared for preschool and I am sharing a post about all the different things we… Read More

2015 – Looking ahead

01/01/201501/01/2015

Since Jessica’s diagnosis, I don’t really tend to look ahead into the future – it feels far too uncertain and scary particularly with the possibility that 2015 will bring Jessica’s next major heart surgery. The first little milestone that 2015 will bring though is Jessica starting pre-school which is just under a week away. I… Read More
