The day I flashed Santa

01/12/201401/06/2016

The photo above was taken on Christmas morning on the cardiac ward. It was Jessica’s first Christmas and she had been transferred to the ward from the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) the day before after having spent 10 days on PICU recovering from open heart surgery. The ward was beautifully decorated, the nurses had… Read More

Breastfeeding and anti-depressants

14/10/201419/07/2017
Sophie breastfeeding

Is breastfeeding in public provocative?

29/09/201411/05/2016

Every so often it seems I hear yet another story of a fellow breastfeeding mum being asked to cover up or to leave when she is feeding her baby out and about in public and this makes me sad and angry. Why do certain members of society seem to have such an issue with seeing… Read More

From having to express and give Jessica my milk via a feeding tube when she was a newborn to being able to exclusively breastfeed Sophie from the moment she was born – two contrasting journeys… Read More

Night feeds

17/09/201411/05/2016

Drifting through dreamland, my blissful slumber Is suddenly shattered by cries of hunger The baby’s awake and she wants to be fed I pick her up and stumble back to my bed Finding the breast, she latches on with a sigh I cuddle her close and we both close our eyes Dozing together, snuggling sleepily… Read More

Milk blisters

02/09/201411/05/2016

I added another new experience to my breastfeeding journey a couple of weeks ago when I developed a milk blister.   A milk blister occurs when a tiny amount of skin overgrows a milk duct opening causing milk to get blocked behind it and it is quite painful. A quick internet search brought up some information… Read More

Thoughts on the feeding front

19/08/201411/05/2016

It’s been a bit of a mixed week on the feeding front. In some ways, the current phase feels a lot like the newborn phase with Sophie wanting to feed more often, cluster feeding in the evening and waking a couple of times overnight for a feed. A lot of parenting books tell me she… Read More
