Breastfeeding – a journey

23/09/201411/05/2016

Although I have managed to breastfeed both my girls into toddlerhood, my two breastfeeding journeys have been so very different. From having to express and give Jessica my milk via a feeding tube when she was a newborn to being able to exclusively breastfeed Sophie from the moment she was born – two contrasting journeys… Read More

Night feeds

17/09/201411/05/2016

Drifting through dreamland, my blissful slumber Is suddenly shattered by cries of hunger The baby’s awake and she wants to be fed I pick her up and stumble back to my bed Finding the breast, she latches on with a sigh I cuddle her close and we both close our eyes Dozing together, snuggling sleepily… Read More

Milk blisters

02/09/201411/05/2016

I added another new experience to my breastfeeding journey a couple of weeks ago when I developed a milk blister.   A milk blister occurs when a tiny amount of skin overgrows a milk duct opening causing milk to get blocked behind it and it is quite painful. A quick internet search brought up some information… Read More

Thoughts on the feeding front

Night nursing and restless legs

13/08/201411/05/2016

I’ve suffered from restless legs on and off since I was a teenager. I had the occasional bout during my pregnancies with Jessica and Sophie but it wasn’t too bad. However, one of the times when it frequently flares up is during the night if Sophie wakes for a feed. I’ll pick her up, put… Read More

Stress and supply

07/08/201411/05/2016

I have posted before about the early days of breastfeeding Jessica, or more accurately, expressing and her getting my milk via a tube for the first week or so until she was finally able to breastfeed at about ten days old. Fast forward a few days from that first proper breastfeed and my elation about… Read More

Breastfeeding my heart child: getting back to the breast after chylothorax

08/07/201414/07/2018

Six long weeks of not being able to give Jessica my milk due to a chylothorax felt like an eternity at times. Six long weeks of continually expressing to keep my milk supply going. Hoping that at the end of them, Jessica would be able to go back to the breast. I counted the days,… Read More
