Russian dolls – a creative pregnancy reveal idea

Yesterday, I revealed on the blog that we were expecting baby number three. It’s lovely to be able to be out in the open with our news, although our family and some close friends have known for a while. We first revealed the news to our parents and the girls around Christmas using a set of personalised Russian dolls.

I quite like a surprise pregnancy reveal. When I was pregnant with Jessica, we decided to tell hubby’s parents on his mum’s birthday. We waited until we were out at a family meal before giving her a card with “Happy Birthday Grandma” on the front along with a scan photo of “Sprout” (as Jessica was known back then).

Second time around, we bought Jessica a T-shirt that said “I’m going to be a big sister.” Once again, our announcement came during a family birthday meal (my mum’s this time). We put Jessica in her T-shirt with a cardigan over the top. Once the family were sitting down ready for the meal, we quietly removed Jessica’s cardigan. It wasn’t long before one of my sisters spotted just what Jessica was wearing!

This time around, Christmas provided the perfect opportunity. What better way to announce than with a very special personalised gift for the grandparents?

Watching the girls playing with my big set of Russian dolls had inspired me. I bought two sets of plain wooden Russian dolls – each containing five dolls. Over the next couple of weeks, I got busy drawing and painting them using paint pens, finishing off with a couple of thin coats of varnish.  The biggest doll was hubby, followed by me, Jessica, Sophie and finishing with a very tiny Peanut. The dolls were wrapped and ready to give to our parents. I couldn’t wait to see their reactions!

You can see my mum’s reaction in the video below. I have to admit, I thought she’d guess as soon as she started opening the dolls. As you can see, it took a little longer for the penny to drop!

  1. I love your mum’s reaction. Congratulations to you all. I love Russian Dolls. I once posted a picture of Russian Dolls lined up as my cover photo on Facebook. My sister in law messaged me to ask of I was trying to tell people something. Great idea. Sarah #sharingthebloglove

    1. Thanks Sarah. I love Russian dolls too. Love how your sister in law thought your cover photo was trying to say something 🙂

  2. This is so cute Louise! And I’d have known that was you guys anywhere – you did a great job! Such a sweet way to tell people – I feel we missed out on that, particularly second time around, as I was so sick that everyone just guessed! Thanks for joining us at #SharingtheBlogLove

    1. Thank you Katy, I’m glad we managed to keep it a surprise this time around. We found it harder to keep the surprise second time around – lots of people guessed early with us too.

    1. Thank you Laura. It did take a while for her to realise! Loved her reaction when the penny dropped 🙂
