Review and giveaway – Buzzy Friends

My girls love books – especially ones with bright colourful illustrations, animal characters and stories being told in rhyme. We were recently sent a copy of Harty Hedgehog and his BuZZy Friends, one of the books in the BuZZy Friends series of books, which ticked all of those boxes.

The BuZZy friends books were originally created by Michael Walter to amuse his granddaughter.  The stories help to guide children through various experiences that they might encounter, and include the “BuZZy Code” – a rhyme which helps to encourage children to be kind and thoughtful. I liked the reminder to “enjoy every day as much as you can” and “remember that no one gets everything right” included in the code.  The rhyming style worked well with telling the story and helping to describe the different characters.

Harty Hedgehog and his BuZZy Friends introduces the four main BuZZY Friends characters who are:

  • Harty the Hedgehog, the clever one who answers all his friends’ questions.
  • Officer Buzzle, a bumble bee who keeps law and order in the BuZZy world.
  • Garlanda, a brave goose who protects her friends.
  • Treacle the kitten, who likes to have fun.

As well as introducing the four BuZZy Friends, the book also focuses on helping children learn about words and numbers, through matching letters with pictures and talking about how many candles go on a birthday cake. Sophie loved the pages with the letter cards in the illustrations – “Look Mummy, it’s ABCDs!” and telling me what the letters and pictures were.

Harty Hedgehog and his BuZZy Friends is a book that would appeal to children aged around 3-5. At 30-pages long, it is a good length for both my girls to enjoy listening to without losing interest. Sophie enjoyed the story so much that she asked for it to be read again (and again!) and Jessica has enjoyed looking through the pictures and using them to tell her own version of the story!

At present, there are three more books in the BuZZY Friends series – A BuZZy Birthday Party: Treacle’s Birthday Treat; A BuZZy Seaside Holiday and A BuZZy White Christmas with more titles being planned.

I have a second copy of Harty Hedgehog and his Buzzy Friends to give away to one of my readers. To be in with a chance to win it, you can enter the competition using the Gleam form below. The competition is open to UK entrants and ends on 30th October 2016 at 11.59PM.  Good luck!
