Memories of Summer

Memories of Summer - Little Hearts, Big LoveSummer days when I was ten
How much fun we had back then!
Playing with my friends outside
Out in the park, on the swings and slide
Kerbsies, swingball, water fights
And going to bed when it still was light

Summer days, sweet seventeen
First romance and love’s young dream
Walking on the beach in a state of bliss
Holding hands, and stopping to steal a kiss
He said he’d write but we both knew
As the holiday ended, our romance was through

Summer days, aged twenty-five
Just got a car and learnt to drive
Off round the country on our holidays
Exploring the wonders of the canal waterways
Aqueducts and bridges, the locks at Caen Hill
The Anderton lift and the Falkirk Wheel

Summer days, thirty years old
“For better, for worse, to have and to hold.”
A wedding day in mid July
Then off on honeymoon we did fly
Basking by Lake Geneva in the summer glow
Then up on the Jungfrau to play in the snow

Summer days, a few years on
Two beautiful children to dote upon
Off to find gold postboxes or book benches we go
Or off to the woods – let’s find the Gruffalo
CBeebies Land, Legoland, fun things to do
Storing up memories for when summer is through

  1. Great poem! And you’ve been up the jungfrau – so have I! Wengen is my favourite place in the world – i love the swiss mountains! xxx

  2. I love that we approached this in such a similar way! Your poem is brilliant (far more poem like than mine :)) I love all your memories from the different points in your life so far. A lovely snapshot of each age. Fabulous 🙂 Thank you so much for linking to #ThePrompt x

    1. Thank you – loved your poem too – I’m just rubbish at trying to write poems that don’t rhyme, and thought yours was beautiful. Was lovely revisiting the memories and great to join in with #ThePrompt again 🙂

  3. Brilliant poem, I’d love to be able to express myself through poetry! #ThePrompt

  4. Great example of the way things change as we grow older and the special moments in life. Sounds like you’ve had an action-packed summer x

  5. Oh my gosh, this is so beautiful and brought back so many wonderful memories for me. It really did bring tears to my eyes. What brilliant poetry. Thank you so much for linking to Prose for Thought 🙂 x
