Friday Focus 16/08/2024 – Swimming

Thomas had his first swimming lessons this week, doing a swim school short course. He loves the water and has enjoyed going swimming each morning. I thought a short course was a good way of seeing how well he’d cope with swimming lessons before we looked into booking weekly ones. We did the same with Sophie when she first started swimming.

On the first morning, there were only four in the class which worked well for him as he needed a bit more focused attention from the swimming teachers. The class has been much bigger though the rest of the week as several children changed their slot and while Thomas has loved being in the water, he’s been much more distracted and found it more difficult to focus on the lesson. It’s clear that the standard group lessons are not going to work for him and we’re now looking into trying to book SEN swimming lessons for him.

Sophie stopped her swimming lessons a few weeks back after she got her 100m distance award. She’s enjoyed being able to swim for fun this week while Thomas has had his lessons.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Sophie and Thomas sitting on a statue of a shepherd with dogs outside a shop; Thomas looking at my mum's cuckoo clock; Sophie and Thomas looking at a Lego model of a lion; Thomas looking at a Lego model of a penguin; Thomas wearing a paper crown with numbers written on it; Thomas arranging his number magnets on the fridge; black swimming googles on top of an orange towel - "#366daysofgratitude 2024 - week 33"

  • Day 222 – I am grateful for a wander around the shops.

  • Day 223 – I am grateful for cuckoo clocks.

  • Day 224 – I am grateful for going on a brick safari while out shopping.

  • Day 225 – I am grateful for my friends taking Sophie to the cinema to see Inside Out 2 while I had time with Thomas.

  • Day 226 – I am grateful for calming activities.

  • Day 227 – I am grateful for some new number magnets for the fridge.

  • Day 228 – I am grateful for prescription swimming googles. So amazing to actually be able to see when going swimming!

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Spending time with my mum.

Sophie and Thomas sitting on a sofa with my mum

  • Sophie getting her tap exam results – she got a distinction and 92 marks.

  • Doing some painting with Thomas.

Thomas painting a plaster model of a Colourblocks character

  • Sophie’s excitement at being allowed to go to the pub with the cast after rehearsal as a one-off treat.

  1. I find swimming is such a useful skill to learn when one is young. You just never know when it is going to come in handy. Well done for making it a fun swimming Summer for the little ones. I wish I had those lessons when I was little.

  2. Aww! How wonderful that Thomas has had swimming lessons. It is a good idea to do what you have done and try a short course before committing to anything longer. At least now you have found out that SEN lessons are the way forward. I didn’t know that prescription swimming googles were a thing. The reason my fella doesn’t swim as he wouldn’t want to be without his glasses. x

  3. Ah, good idea to try out the swimming lessons. Fingers crossed you’ll find a class that’s right for Thomas. N was so pleased to give up swimming lessons, but I think it’s a shame as he was quite good (if steady), and they lose their standard so fast. He’s been going sometimes with his older cousin to a nearby pool, and they swim a few lengths. Unfortunately the lane swimming they have to be over 15, even if they can and will just swim lanes. Which I think is ridiculous.

Well done Sophie on the tap exam results (I love the creme egg dress!)

  4. My kids have always had difficulty with swimming, but I don’t know if that’s because I haven’t taken them enough. My older kids were always in the pool and can swim much better than me. Well done to Sophie on her tap results.

  5. I never thought I’d hear anyone say ‘I’m grateful for cuckoo clocks’ I hope you can find suitable swimming lessons for Thomas. Well done to Sophie with her Tap results
