Friday Focus 30/05/2025 – Shows

Our half-term week has been focused on shows with all of us involved in various different shows throughout the week and preparing for future ones.

Sophie and Thomas both took part in their Brigades display last Friday and performed well. Sophie’s section performed ‘When I Grow Up’ from Matilda with Sophie singing Matilda’s part. Thomas’s section did ‘On the First Night of Boys’ Brigade’ (to the tune of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’).  He had the line ‘six Holy Bibles’ and sang it with gusto each time – number-based songs always go down well for him! I was playing the piano for the display and my husband was doing sound and projection so we were all involved.

On Saturday, it was my turn to be on stage with the first two performances of the old time music hall show I’m currently doing, with my husband doing sound and lighting. It’s been a fun show to do and I enjoyed performing ‘Burlington Bertie from Bow’ and ‘When I Take My Morning Promenade’ as well as all the group numbers. We get to do it all over again for two more performances on 7 June so that will be fun. Sophie came to see it with Grandma and Grandad in the evening while Thomas was at home with my mum.

Sophie had a dance festival on Sunday. She didn’t place in either of her sections that day but enjoyed seeing her dance friends and taking part.

On Monday, Sophie had auditions at the Beck Theatre for this year’s summer youth project and will find out in a couple of weeks whether she got in to the cast.

From Tuesday onwards, Sophie and Thomas have been in rehearsals at the Riverside Theatre during the day for their dance school’s first show which opens tonight. I’ve also spent most of the week at the theatre with them helping out and chaperoning.

On Wednesday evening, Sophie and I had a rehearsal revisiting various songs from The Wind in the Willows which we will be performing at the NODA awards. I’m loving having the opportunity to play Mole again and Sophie is delighted that she’s taking on the role of Horse for this as well as playing one of the Hedgehog children.

Sophie’s also been busy this week learning lines for two more shows that are coming up in the next few weeks. She had auditions last week for her year 6 production A Hint of Snow White and has been cast as HRH (the Prince) and is also playing several roles in Dexter and Winter’s Detective Agency with BYT.

It’s been a full-on week but it’s also been a lot of fun. I’m really looking forward to seeing Sophie and Thomas and all their dance friends doing their show this weekend. They’ve worked hard and it’s been lovely to see it all come together.
