Friday Focus 21/03/2025 – Performing

We’ve had a busy week of performing with Sophie competing in a dance festival last weekend and then taking part in Energize, a music, dance and drama festival which various schools take part in. She and some of her classmates are taking part in two performances – one yesterday which my husband and his parents went to see, and the other one tomorrow evening when I’ll get the chance to see her perform.

The word 'performing' drawn on a stage with lights

Thomas has been doing a little bit of performing this week too. One of his dance teachers has been doing some work with him on reading poems and this week he asked to write his own and read it out. He was so proud of his poem about ‘Colourballs’ which are characters that he likes to draw and I think have come out of his own imagination.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

A latte and a pistachio and chocolate cookie sandwich; Sophie with her duet partner holding their gold medals; Sophie holding her six medals from the dance festival; our new shower; Thomas and Sophie playing the keyboard together; Sophie's Numberblocks picture; trainers with a world map on them - "#365daysofgratitude 2025 - Week 12"

  • Day 73 – I am grateful for some time out while Sophie and Thomas were at Brigades.

  • Day 74 – I am grateful for beautiful dance friendships and the way that connection comes across so beautifully when they are performing on stage. A huge well done to these girls for placing first in both their duets today.

  • Day 75 – I am grateful for another lovely dance festival weekend.

  • Day 76 – I am grateful for a new shower.

  • Day 77 – I am grateful for lovely sibling moments.

  • Day 78 – I am grateful for Sophie drawing Thomas a picture of Numberblocks and for the joy it gave him this morning.

  • Day 79 – I am grateful for quirky shoes.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Watching the parakeets in the garden.

Three parakeets in a tree

  • Seeing the old wallpaper behind the bathroom tiles when we had our new shower fitted.

1970s style brown wallpaper

  • Sophie and Thomas snuggled up together in her bed reading a Garfield comic book.

  1. Nice to have a new shower. We need to get ours fixed upstairs. Sounds like the dance festivals and performances went well. How strange to see parakeets – I could just see my Merlin app having a bit of a weird one at that!

    1. We get them quite often where we are but it’s the first time that I’ve seen three in the garden at the same time.

  2. It sounds like Sophie has been really busy and well done to Thomas! He is just adorable.
Lovely photos! Hooray for the new shower and those shoes are just fabulous! x

  3. Well done Thomas, that’s a brilliant poem and very well read!
You really are a very talented family of performers.
That is some very retro wallpaper, the 1970s comes to mind.
I hope you have had a lovely weekend.

  4. Oh, what a lovely addition to your post to see Thomas excitedly reading his poem! He’s too cute! Well done to him. He has a lovely imagination as I have never heard about a colourball before! I’ve since looked up the term and it is something to do with snooker. Glad Thomas has come up with his own idea though. He should be encouraged to continue with poetry. Hopefully, he will be able to express himself and his feelings more through this medium. And well done to Sophie too.

  5. You must be so proud of your two. Well done, Sophie and Thomas. How lovely that Sophie is experiencing the positive dynamics of dance as a team. I like the idea of teaming up poetry and dance and Thomas looks like he is thriving on it. It must be great to see the sibling relationship grow. Parakeets have not made it as far as our region yet, but I guess it’s a matter of time. Must be an amazing sight. We had an escapee budgie in the garden this weekend, which was a first. The quirky shoes are fabulous. What a fun idea!

  6. well done Thomas and Sophie excellent performances from both of them. I have a poem that my 36 yr old daughter wrote when she was 6, it was about a monster rabbit that she had invented 🙂 (it’s a bit faded)

  7. How lovely having parakeets in the garden, we used to have them in ours in Dubai, 100’s of them though and so noisy. Lovely 1960’s wallpaper, it’s almost fashionable again…lol.
I loved listening to Thomas reading the poem he wrote, he did really well with both writing and reading. Your shoes are fab.

  8. What a super talented family! Performing, dancing, writing poetry, drawing! It’s so sweet that Sophie and Thomas play together.
The parakeets look so cute! And the shoes are quirky and stylish. And how nice it is to have a new shower.
