Friday Focus 10/07/2026 – Up-and-down

This week has been quite an up-and-down one. We had the Girls’ and Boys’ Brigade awards evening last Friday and it was lovely to see Sophie and Thomas get their badges for the year. Thomas also got all the special awards in the Anchors section – highest attendance, highest church and church parade attendance and the shield for the most marks awarded. He was also officially moved up into the Juniors section and is looking forward to his first session in Juniors this evening.

We were all excited on Saturday morning to go and see Sophie performing in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Sophie was looking forward to having all her grandparents and two of her aunties coming along as well plus Thomas was coming with us to see it for the first time. Unfortunately as we were on the way to pick up my in-laws, I had a message from the chaperones to say that there had been a power outage at the theatre and the Saturday matinee performance had to be cancelled as a result. We were all very disappointed, and Sophie was so upset. It’s the second performance that she’s had cancelled and it was such a shame. Thankfully we have managed to transfer all the tickets to other performances but we won’t have everyone coming together as we would have done on Saturday.

Hubby bought a slushie machine for the kitchen which seemed like a great idea in the hot weather, but I was less happy about it when the kids tried to use it without asking first and flooded the kitchen floor and counter with juice. They’ve been told that if they use it again without parental supervision, it will get boxed up and put away and thankfully it’s been fine since then!

Thomas has been finding it harder to focus in swimming lessons recently and his latest swimming teacher doesn’t seem to have the skills to engage his attention. I had a phone call from the swim school about moving him to a different class which resulted in some confusion on Sunday morning when no-one seemed to know which group he was in and none of the group teachers seemed willing to have him in their class. He ended up having a one-to-one with the lead swimming teacher and it’s become clear that one-to-one lessons are going to have to be the way forward as he’s not been coping well lately in the small group classes. It will probably mean a change of day and time and possibly a change of venue but hopefully then he will start to make progress again.

We had a second round of auditions on Wednesday for Doctor Dolittle for a couple of the main parts that were still uncast plus auditioning for animals and puppeteers for the animal puppets. Sophie has been cast as Chee-Chee the chimp and I’ve been cast as Gub-Gub, operating the pig puppet in addition to my role as Gertie Blossom. The really lovely thing about it is that Chee-Chee and Gub-Gub are always on stage together so Sophie and I will get to be together on stage whereas in previous shows, we’ve generally only been on stage together for a couple of the big chorus numbers.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Thomas getting his awards at the Brigades' awards evening; Sophie's pipe cleaner flower; Sophie reading a book; an England flag; Sophie's bubble tea costume; my rehearsal bag; Thomas's comic book - "#365daysofgratitude 2026 - week 27"

  • Day 184 – I am grateful for seeing Sophie and Thomas get their badges and awards at the Brigades’ awards evening.

  • Day 185 – I am grateful for pipe cleaners.

  • Day 186 – I am grateful for books.

  • Day 187 – I am grateful for a good night’s sleep (but happy that the match was worth staying up for for those who have more interest in football than I do)

  • Day 188 – I am grateful that Sophie’s ‘bubble tea’ costume is ready for tomorrow’s fancy dress 5k.

  • Day 189 – I am grateful that one side of my rehearsal bag is now filled with patches representing various shows I’ve performed in.

  • Day 190 – I am grateful for Thomas’s wonderful comic book creations and the joy that creating them gives him. His latest one is currently over 100 pages long and still being added to.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Spending some quiet time visiting Jessica.

Pink peonies at Jessica's forever bed

  • Meeting up with a friend over brunch.

  • Jessica’s preschool finding a group photo with her in while having a sort-out and sending me a copy.

  1. Well done to the kids with the awards evening, you must be so proud!
Oh no! That is such a shame about the power outage a the theatre! It sounds like Sophie is a real star and I am betting there will be plenty more shows to see her in!
The slushie machine sounds great but the kids flooding the kitchen is not so good. It sounds like they’ve learned their lesson!
Congrats on the successful audition for you and Sophie! x
