Friday Focus 09/10/2026 – Rehearsals

This week is the last week of rehearsals before the craziness begins and I’m into two consecutive show weeks for Into the Woods and Doctor Dolittle. It has been intense trying to do two shows simultaneously and be ready for both, but other than last-minute polishing on blocking and choreography, I’m feeling mostly ready to go.

Sophie also started rehearsals for panto on Sunday which she enjoyed and she was very happy that her panto bestie is also in the same team as her again this year. Sunday was a busy three-show rehearsal day as there was also a Doctor Dolittle rehearsal in the afternoon followed by an Into the Woods rehearsal in the evening. We got to see the set for Into the Woods for the first time though which was exciting and tonight we get to rehearse on stage with the set for the first time.

The next two weeks are going to be full-on and crazy but hopefully a lot of fun too!

In between rehearsals, we’ve had some nice sociable time too. We went to my niece’s engagement party on Saturday and had a lovely evening. It was so nice to catch up with family. We also went to my lovely friend’s 60th birthday and retirement party on Tuesday which was in the outdoor centre where she worked and Sophie and Thomas particularly enjoyed the pond dipping and making s’mores.

We also had a lovely evening out in London yesterday when Sophie, my husband and I went to see Martin Guerre at The Old Vic. It’s not a very well-known musical, but both my husband and I love the 1999 cast recording and we loved the last production of it that we saw at the Watermill Theatre (the only thing we’ve seen there other than Chitty). It was a very different production to the Watermill one with a lot of changes to the score and storyline which I think made it truer to the historical events. Some of the new lyrics and settings were an improvement on the original cast recording and there was some nice clever staging and use of props. It was a good show overall and we enjoyed it, but liked the Watermill production more.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Sunflowers at Jessica's forever bed; Sophie with her little cousin; a flyer for Jack and the Beanstalk; Thomas doing a brass rubbing of a butterfly; marshmallows toasting over a fire pit; a T-shirt from Singapore; a programme for Martin Guerre - "#365daysofgratitude - Week 40"

  • Day 275 – I am grateful for some quiet time with Jessica.

  • Day 276 – I am grateful for cousins.

  • Day 277 – I am grateful that Sophie enjoyed her first rehearsal for this year’s panto and is in the same team as her panto bestie.

  • Day 278 – I am grateful for doing some brass rubbings on a lovely walk with Thomas while Sophie was at her dance lesson.

  • Day 279 – I am grateful for a lovely evening celebrating a lovely friend’s birthday.

  • Day 280 – I am grateful that my husband is back from his trip to Singapore.

  • Day 281 – I am grateful for an evening at the theatre seeing Martin Guerre.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Thomas getting his new Juniors uniform for Boys’ Brigade.

  • Getting up to sing karaoke with Sophie at my niece’s engagement party.
