Friday Focus 07/02/2025 – Disappointed

We’re feeling quite disappointed this week thanks to the timing of round two of chickenpox hitting the LHBL house. I didn’t think we’d escape it with Thomas, but I was hoping it would appear by the end of last weekend as it takes about five days from the spots appearing to them scabbing over and no longer being contagious, and we had a trip to Torquay booked this weekend for the Land’s End – John O’Groats Association annual weekend.

The word 'disappointed' in grey bubble writing

Thomas had a couple of days of feeling unwell from Sunday afternoon onwards and had very similar symptoms to Sophie before the chickenpox struck. I was hoping that the spots would appear quickly, but it was Tuesday afternoon by the time they started to appear and so we’ve had to cancel our trip.

We’re all disappointed to miss out on the weekend, especially as we missed it last year due to Sophie’s 11+ tuition, and it’s always a lovely weekend away. I’m doubly disappointed as I turned down the opportunity to be a soloist in a G&S concert due to going away this weekend and so I’ve missed out on both things! These things happen though and there’s nothing we can do other than try to make the best of it, and Sophie and I have a cinema trip planned to see the new Dogman movie tomorrow instead. It’ll be nice for her to have an afternoon out with me, and Thomas can have some one-to-one time with Daddy at home.

Thankfully, Thomas has felt better since the spots appeared, and while he is much spottier than Sophie was, he is coping much better than I expected him to. Calamine cream, oat baths and Piriton are all helping to keep the itchiness under control and we’ve had lots of lovely snuggles together on the sofa and time playing with Lego and playing board games. He’s disappointed about missing out on the weekend away but is definitely not disappointed about having to be off school for a few days!

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Lego roses in a vase; my husband with Sophie next to him and Thomas lying upside-down on Sophie; Thomas on his balance bike at the park; me performing in music hall; my desk; Sophie on her bike; Thomas looking at a calendar in an old diary - "#365daysofgratitude 2025 week 6"

  • Day 31 – I am grateful for Lego roses.

  • Day 32 – I am grateful for moments of silliness.

  • Day 33 – I am grateful for getting the bikes out for a trip to the park.

  • Day 34 – I am grateful for a fun evening reliving memories of our last music hall show and looking forward to getting started on another one.

  • Day 35 – I am grateful for Zoom meetings and being able to work from home.

  • Day 36 – I am grateful that Sophie has enjoyed doing Bikeability this week.

  • Day 37 – I am grateful for old diaries.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Thomas hiding in the cupboard at ballet.

Thomas hiding under the stage at ballet

  • Receiving a beautiful photo of Sophie in her panto costume.

  1. Poor Thomas, I’m glad to hear he’s feeling a bit better now. Hopefully, that’s chicken pox done and dusted for you all now.
It’s a shame you’ve had to miss out on things especially the weekend away but sometimes these things are unavoidable. I hope you have a lovely weekend at home together to make up for missing out.
Enjoy Dogman, we can’t wait to watch it too.

  2. Oh no! What bad timing for Thomas to catch Chicken Pox. I am so sorry you have had to cancel your trip and miss out on the concert too. I hope you have a great trip to the cinema and enjoy the movie. That’s great that Thomas is handling Chicken Pox better than expected, I hope he is all better soon. x

  4. Oh I’m so sorry you’ve had to miss out on so much. I’d be disappointed too. That’s the problem with Chicken pox sometimes it can take so long. But at least you’re free of the worry of it now. I hope you can make up for missing your trip later in the year with something special.

  5. Sorry to hear you had to miss your break. It is always frustrating when the kids are ill, but hopefully you are out the other side now. I love the LEGO flowers
