In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Petersfield High Street, half-hidden between the shops, lies a quiet oasis of beauty and tranquility. Petersfield Physic Garden is the perfect place for some time out whilst shopping, somewhere to sit and relax for a few minutes and bask in the unseasonably warm sunshine of a late September morning.
That said, with two small children in tow, there wasn’t that much opportunity to sit and bask although it is certainly something that I used to spend a lot of time doing in this garden back in my late teens. It was the perfect spot to sit and daydream and although I hadn’t set foot in the garden in sixteen years or so, it was just as I remember it being.
The garden is laid out like a 17th century garden with four distinct areas – the Knot Garden, the Topiary Walk, the Orchard and the Herb Garden. The Herb Garden is the largest of these and my favourite part of the garden. The girls loved running up and down the paths in this part of the garden, picking up sticks off the ground and looking at the different plants.
Jessica spent most of the time hunting for “my vegetable garden” and I think she was a little disappointed not to find it! Sophie was just happy to wander about, and spend time with Nanny, who had never visited the garden before, despite having lived in the town for thirty-odd years!
It was the perfect spot to take some photos of the girls together to send to Daddy while he was away working on an event. I particularly love the little gate at the far end of the garden which looks out over the stream which runs alongside the main town car park.
Petersfield Physic Garden is open daily (apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day) from 9am – 6pm in the summer and 9am – 4pm in the winter. Entry is free.
Oh, this looks lovely. I love revisiting places from many years ago. We have had lots of sunshine in Sept and now even in October. 🙂 It’s great that such a lovely place is free entry x
Thanks Claire – it has been lovely to have so much sunshine hasn’t it? Shame it hasn’t continued into this week though! 🙂
This looks absolutely beautiful, I love gardens like this, something I miss in fact as I haven’t found anywhere like this here yet… It looks like the girls had a wonderful time x #countrykids
Thanks Sara – the girls really enjoyed it 🙂
How gorgeous. I had flashbacks when I read this of my regular visits to the Chelsea Physics garden in London when my two were little!
Thanks Kriss, glad it brought back some happy memories for you 🙂
We haven’t been there yet, it looks like a beautiful place for a family day out. I’m sure your girls had a great time. Beautiful photos too, Louise especially the last one. xx
Thanks Melody, I love that last photo too 🙂
Oh lovely. I do like a formal garden. Beautiful photos. How wonderful that you could share it with their Nanny too. #CountryKids
Thank you – it was lovely to have some time out and about with my mum too 🙂
Looks live a lovely place to visit. Love that final photo of the girls by the gate – they look so happy!
Thanks Sarah – I love that photo too – it was a good place for taking some siblings shots! 🙂
Looks so beautiful and the girls are obviously having a great time. I love herb gardens for the wonderful smells you get as you walk through, brushing past the plants.

It was lovely and those herby smells are wonderful, aren’t they? 🙂
What a fab place for you to be able to explore with the girls, I bet it was great to watch them explore the gardens you loved exploring when you were younger. It’s funny that your mum hadn’t visited the garden til now, sometimes you don’t really explore your local area until you’ve got guests to go with you. The girls look like they’re really enjoying exploring all the different parts of the garden and being able to spend the day with Mummy and Nanny. Thanks for linking up with me on Country Kids.
I was quite surprised that my mum had never visited but it was lovely for her to discover somewhere new too and we all enjoyed it 🙂
A lovely looking spot for a visit-the gate looks very magical 🙂
Thanks Iona – I do love that gate, and yes it does have a magical quality to it 🙂
Beautiful photos…love those old kitchen gardens. #countrykids

Looks a great place to visit and with free entry too!
It was lovely – and free entry is always a plus! 🙂
That looks like a lovely garden. I wish we had more pretty open spaces like this where i live. #CountryKids
It’s gorgeous – not quite as pretty as it would have been in summer but still a lovely place to explore 🙂
