From the mouths of babes is a weekly linky which invites you to share a post, old or new, about something your children have said. Those adorable mispronounced words, the glimpses into their imaginations, the blunt observations – whatever it is, I’d love to hear about it!
A big thank you to everyone who linked up last week. I loved Conversation with Hank’s post about Tess Asplund and Hanks’ comment about skin just being a shell for who you are on the inside – so very true. I also enjoyed Nipper and Tyke’s list of Jet’s latest sayings – especially the one about cats drinking gin.
My father-in-law dislocated his knee a couple of weeks ago and had to go into hospital last week for surgery to reattach the muscles and tendons. Jessica knew that Grandad had a poorly knee and I explained to her that he had to go into hospital to have it fixed and wouldn’t be able to walk for a while. She had a few questions about it all:
Jessica: “How did Grandad hurt his leg?”
Me: “He fell over something.”
Jessica: “What did he fall over? Did he fall over a tortoise?”
Me (trying to not laugh): “No, not a tortoise. He fell over a box that someone had left lying around.”
Jessica: “Who left it there? It wasn’t me. It wasn’t E [her best friend] either and it wasn’t Sophie.”
Me: “No, I know it wasn’t you, or E, or Sophie. I don’t know who left it there.”
Bless her. I have no idea where she got the idea he fell over a tortoise though – I’d love to know what her thought processes were that led to that idea!
Talking about Grandad going to hospital reminded her about her own recent stay in hospital.
“I went to hospital Mummy. I didn’t hurt my leg though. I was in hospital because I was all hot. And Sophie came to see me and brought my pink cat and my tiger book.”
Love how she remembers the little details – and being in hospital because she was all hot is a very good description of having a fever caused by a chest infection.
Jessica’s been quite fascinated by Grandad’s plaster cast since he’s been back home again. Apparently it “looks like a roller” and “sounds like a door” – well I guess it does sound a bit like a door when you rap it with your knuckles!
If you have any posts about something that your children have been saying lately, please do come and link up. The linky opens each Monday from 6am and closes on Friday at 11pm so there is plenty of time to link up your posts (old and new posts are welcome!). Please add the badge below to your post so others know where they can also link up (the badge code is below). I will also try and share posts via Twitter – please use the hashtag #ftmob and I’ll do my best to retweet them. I also have a Pinterest board and will be sharing posts here too.
Looking forward to reading what your little ones have been saying!
Awww that’s so sweet – tripped over a tortoise is so funny!
It really is lovely how they remember the strangest details about things – Boo still talks about how you can get balloons at the bike shop (as when she got her bike for her birthday it had a balloon tied to the handlebars when we went to pick it up)
Thanks Jenni – love how Boo remembers the balloons from the bike shop and thinks that you can get them there because of them being on her birthday bike 🙂
Brilliant. Our granddad once fell off his bike and hurt his knee. Now evere injury is blamed on the bike, his heart condition, his hip replacement and even a paper cut…. ‘did you fall off your bike again silly granddad’
Tortoise though, that’s a classic!
So funny that the bike is blamed for everything. Tortoise is a very random choice of something to trip over!
Haha does anyone in your family even have a tortoise? Perhaps it’s a story or something she saw on TV – sounds a bit ‘Charlie & Lola’ maybe? Anyway, it’s very cute! Thanks for another great linky story #FTMOB
My sister used to have a tortoise but he now lives with her ex-husband and has done for the last 18 months – I’m not sure if Jessica remembers him but that could be an explanation! I don’t remember seeing anything on TV that might have triggered it!
Aaaw hahaha bless her. That’s too cute though.
Haven’t linked up for 2 weeks now :P. Olivia has’t been funny lol. But, I’ve got one sitting in my draft for Monday. xx
Will look forward to it when you get a chance! 🙂
Haha love that she thought he fell over a tortoise! It’s almost an impossible situation that could be true! Aw bless her for remembering the details! Thanks for hosting!
It did make me laugh – of all the things she could have chosen, that was the last thing I’d have ever expected her to say! 🙂
Awww bless her, justifying it wasn’t her, Sophie or E that left the box there for grandpa to trip over. Funny she’d thought he might have tripped over a tortoise. You wonder how they come up with things like that’s don’t you? Children have such a good memory. Her remembering what she felt like when last in hospital and what S brought her shows how much those little attentions matter. xxx
It always amazes me just how much they both remember about things – it really does make you realise how important some of those little moments are x
