From the mouths of babes #58 – Bungalow darmees

From the mouths of babes is a weekly linky which invites you to share a post, old or new, about something your children have said. Those adorable mispronounced words, the glimpses into their imaginations, the blunt observations – whatever it is, I’d love to hear about it!

A big thank you to everyone who linked up last week. Inside Martyn’s Thoughts made me chuckle with his boys’ explanation of how we get coloured wool to make jumpers and I loved the comments that Writing Bubble’s boys gave on Twitter after their shapes were chosen for #ShapeChallenge and the confidence they gained from it.

Sophie’s speech is coming on leaps and bounds at the moment. I had a compliment from her the other day, when she came and sat on my lap, looked in my eyes and said “Mummy, you are so cute!”

We have a new Sophie-ism which I love – “bungalow darmees” (Gruffalo pyjamas). It’s one that makes all of us laugh. Jessica has been constantly asking Sophie to say “Gruffalo jarmees” and then laughing when she does. Sophie was quite happy to respond with “bungalow darmees” at first. She has now got wise to this though. Her response is rapidly changing to “No, Jess-ita! I not want to!”

At bedtime the other day, the girls wanted to turn the lights off and put Mummy and Daddy to bed on the sofas. We were quite happy to snuggle down and pretend to sleep. Sophie tucked us both in with the blanket – “go to sleep, Mummy. Go to sleep, Michael.” Hubby wasn’t quite so impressed at being called by his name rather than Daddy! Sadly any attempts at going to sleep were met with “wake up Mummy! Wake up Michael!”

If you have any posts about something that your children have been saying lately, please do come and link up. The linky opens each Monday from 6am and closes on Friday at 11pm so there is plenty of time to link up your posts (old and new posts are welcome!). Please add the badge below to your post so others know where they can also link up (the badge code is below). I will also try and share posts via Twitter – please use the hashtag #ftmob and I’ll do my best to retweet them. I also have a Pinterest board and will be sharing posts here too.

Looking forward to reading what your little ones have been saying!

  1. Thanks for mentioning me!! Haha bungalow darmees! That’s one of those things that’ll stick. Haha poor hubby! I’ve found that it’s usually the Dads that get first named first.

    1. Bungalow darmees is definitely my new favourite toddlerism – and yes it has stuck! I’m not even sure that the children know what my first name is but they certainly hear me shouting out to hubby a lot so perhaps its not too surprising that they’re using his name and copying me!

  2. Awwww, I love that compliment! When your little one tells you you’re cute, you know they really mean it! I love it when little ones mispronounce words in such a sweet way, and I’d be just like Jessica trying to make her say it again and again! xx

    1. I love the way Jessica keeps trying to get Sophie to repeat it and Sophie’s reaction now that she’s twigged why she keeps being asked to say it! Compliments from children are the best 🙂

  3. We’ve also had periods of Tilly calling us by our names or Mum and Dad rather than Mummy and Daddy to get a reaction. Fortunately it passes after a while! We’re also enjoying being told we’re pretty, gorgeous (not me) and handsome. That’s a habit that can hang around for a while!

    1. Jessica’s now at the age that she occasionally goes for “Mum” instead of “Mummy” to get a reaction too. Glad to hear that Tilly’s good on the compliments too!

    1. I love “bamalamas” – that’s a great way of saying bananas and “Dane” instead of “Jane” sounds adorable 🙂

  4. Jet calls Chris Chris, he doesn’t really mind it. I think I would hate it if he started calling me Alice, but instead he calls me darling, which is really cute 😀
    Bungalow darmees is adorable!

    1. I hadn’t thought about it from that perspective – thankfully the girls have never done it when out and about!

  5. Thanks for the mention! Your girls sound adorable as always! Gruffalo pyjamas are a favourite in this house too and our 2yo always sings it like the Bob Marley song ‘Buffalo Soldier’ – I’m wearing “gruffalo pyjamas du du du du du du!”

  6. Aww love the bungalow darmies! My 18 month old is currently calling the gruffalo ‘cugglos’, which sounds so much like her ‘cuggles’ for cuddles that I was confused for ages. As was she since I kept hugging her and not producing her requested Gruffalo! Thanks for hosting! #ftmob

  7. Bungalow darmies is SO cute. Sometimes the alternative words are better than the original. I’m sure Julia Donaldson would’t mind changing the words “There’s no such thing as the Bungalow!” 🙂 #ftmob

  8. Why is it when they put us to bed they always wake us up? I can promise that I have NEVER woken Freya up 🙂 Lovely post.
