Making a bracelet using a pipe-cleaner and foam beads

Threading foam beads on to a pipe-cleaner is a great activity for toddlers and pre-schoolers as there are so many things they can learn through doing it. Threading the beads on to the pipe cleaner is great for improving fine motor skills plus it can also help them with counting numbers, and shape and colour recognition.

Jessica found it a little tricky trying to get the foam beads on to the pipe cleaner when we first started the activity – mostly as the holes in the centre weren’t punched out that well. After I’d enlarged the holes using a chopstick, she found it much easier.

She was very definite about deciding which particular shape and colour bead she wanted to add next each time and threading the beads on to the pipe cleaner kept her occupied for quite a while.

Once the beads had all been threaded on to the pipe-cleaner, I helped Jessica join the ends together and twist them up to make a bracelet. She’s been very pleased with this latest addition to her jewellery box. We need to get some more beads but next time we’ll try this using two pipe-cleaners together to make a necklace.

  1. That’s fab! My daughter (she’s 8 now) has always loved stringing beads for bracelets but we always used to use string which was quite difficult when she was younger. Great idea with the pipe-cleaners – just wish I’d have thought of that years ago…

  2. Doing it on a pipe cleaner is such a good idea. My youngest finds doing it on string hard – I think she’d find a pipe cleaner easier, thank you for the inspiration. #KidsCorner

  3. Great idea. Children love making necklaces, I know my girls do and it’s really good for those fine motor skills.
    Very pretty.

  4. Now that is a fantastic idea! I never thought to use pipe cleaner for beading. My boys both enjoy beading but when they were younger it was challenging to get them onto the string. I’m going to keep this in mind for my 2-year-old. Thanks for sharing! #KidsCorner

  5. Look at that little lady having fun! This is such a fantastic idea especially with pipecleaners. I’m sure Olivia will want to try this too. xx

  6. What a cute activity!! Where are the beads from? I need some of those! I tell you what Louise, you should do an inventory type post of the things you have in your craft box!! Thank you for sharing in #KidsCorner x

  7. Lucas says – Jessica, you are so awesome when it comes to your #minicreations. These look soooooo cool. I did something like this when I was littler but Ash, my doggie, decided he lied the taste of foam beads so we had to stop!!! The Mother didn’t want him getting a poorly bottom………. Thanks for linking to #minicreations
