Friday Focus 20/10/17 – Starting the countdown to surgery

The countdown for Jessica’s heart surgery has begun. Earlier this week we had the phone call from the hospital letting us know the date. Jessica will be going into hospital on 8th November and having her surgery on 9th November. Our focus now is on making sure we prepare her for it as best we can. So far she is taking it all in her stride. She knows how many sleeps there are left until her “sleepover at the doctors” and has started counting them down. I’m glad that she is so calm about it all although of course it is an anxious time for us as parents.

"Countdown" - this week's word of the week

Next week is half-term. I’m going to focus on enjoying the week with my girls and try not to think too much about anything else.

Things I have loved this week:

  • Watching Sophie have fun with her preschool friends at two birthday parties over the weekend.

Sophie wearing a princess dress at one of her friend's birthday parties

  • Catching up with my family and celebrating my eldest sister’s 60th birthday. It was especially nice to see my eldest brother as I haven’t seen him for nearly two years. Can’t quite get over how much he looks like my dad though!

Me with my family at my sister's 60th birthday

  • Video chats with hubby over Whatsapp.

  • Hubby being back home again after being away working on an event.

  • Planning for Sophie’s birthday party.

  • An evening at Chessington World of Adventures to preview their “Howl’o’ween” attractions.

  1. Sounds like it is going to be an epic week next week! I bet it is nice to have that extra pair of hands around. I can imagine it is draughting prospect of surgery X #wotw

    1. Thank you. I’m looking forward to having time with the girls together for half-term before we have to think about it all x

  2. Is it better or worse having an actual date? It’s great that Jessica’s taking it all in her stride, no doubt because of your reassurances which is a credit to you as I know you’ll be feeling so anxious inside yet she’s not picking up on that. I will be thinking of you all when that time comes. Looks like you’ve had a fun week and I hope you can enjoy next week and put the countdown aside x Thanks for sharing with #WotW

    1. Thank you so much. At the moment I think it is better having the date – I’ve been a little calmer since getting it but at the same time it also makes it very real now so it’s all very mixed. I’m trying not to show my fear in front of Jessica. It does help that she is so matter-of-fact about it all x

  3. Sending love and hugs. Good luck with Jessica’s op. At least you have a date now and are not in limbo but I can’t decide whether that is better or worse.
It sounds like you have had a fab week. So much fun!
Have a wonderful half term! #WotW

    1. Thank you Kim. I’m not sure if it’s better or worse either! Hope you have a lovely half-term too x

  4. It’s going to be a tough time with the operation but keep positive and Jessica will be okay I’m sure. I love that she’s looking forward to her stay, I’m sure she will have lots of fuss made over her. It sounds like you’ve had a lovely week. I’ll be catching up with some of my family next week at a party too, it seems the only time we see each other now, parties or funerals. Sophie looks absolutely adorable in her princess dress, she knows how to pose too 🙂 xx

    1. Thank you Anne. I’m trying to stay positive and I’m glad that Jessica is so chilled out about it all x

  5. I don’t think I have ever been to Chessington it looks like a fab day out. Ah bittersweet news about Jessica’s date. I bet you are glad to finally have an answer but the stress of the opp must be huge for you all. I am so glad Jessica has such a positive outlook about it, shows what an amazing young lady she is x

  6. Lucky Sophie getting to go to two parties in one week. Kids have such great social lives don’t they. I’m glad to hear Jessica is taking it all in her stride although I know how anxious you must be feeling inside. I hope you enjoy the half-term and pack lots of fun in x
