The last times have started as we approach the end of the summer term. We still have a week and a bit to go at school but this week has been the last week of term for most of the kids’ activities.
For Sophie, there have been last sessions of being in various groups. She had her last session in the Juniors at Girls’ Brigade and will officially move up to the Senior section tonight at the Brigades’ awards evening. She also had her last Tuesday evening in Group 1 at BYT. They have their end-of-term performance on Sunday and then from September she’ll be in Group 2 which meets on Sundays.
Thomas had his last sports day at infant school on Monday. It was nearly cancelled as we started the day with rain but thankfully the rain had stopped by the time school started and the field dried out in time for sports day. He came last in all his races but thoroughly enjoyed himself and had a big smile on his face throughout. It reminded me so much of Jessica, who also frequently came last at sports day but always crossed the finish line with the biggest smile on her face.
We’re also in the last week of dance classes before the summer break, although Sophie will be performing at a summer fair next weekend and there will probably be a couple of sessions over the summer to go over festival dances.
Sophie also had her year 6 production this week and I got to see the first and last performances of this. She and her classmates all performed so well. It was such a joy to watch them.
What I’ve been grateful for this week:
- Day 185 – I am grateful for pretty moths and butterflies.
- Day 186 – I am grateful for watching Sophie and her dance friends performing at a school summer fair.
- Day 187 – I am grateful for a lovely day out at Mottisfont with a couple of university friends and their families.
- Day 188 – I am grateful for getting to watch Thomas taking part in his last sports day at infant school.
- Day 189 – I am grateful for getting to watch Sophie play HRH (aka ‘Prince-sy’) in her year 6 production.
- Day 190 – I am grateful for tissue paper and glue.
- Day 191 – I am grateful that today’s walk was mostly in the shade!
Other things that have made me smile this week:
- Sophie buying me a little crocheted robin from one of the stalls at the summer fayre as it made her think of Jessica.
- Starting to put together my costume for a fancy dress party this weekend.
- Having a pretty butterfly settle nearby while I was hanging out the washing.

Experiencing those lasts is so emotional, isn’t it? We’ve just had the last ever school report from Primary school I can’t help but feel sad that the primary school days are almost over.
Well done to Thomas on sports day, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself, and it sounds like he did.
It sounds like Sophie has been busy. I hope she enjoys moving into the new groups after the summer.
Big times with them both moving up in so many groups as well as school. Sounds like a lovely week.
I really liked Mottisfont although I think it was winter when I visited so missed all the flowers
What an emotional time with all of the lasts and big moments for the kids! I am glad it dried up for sports day! It sounds like Thomas had a great time. Oh gosh, the year 6 productions always had me crying! x
So many last moments for you. Exciting times. This year we’ve finished school and I don’t think I’ve thought about how that will feel in September. Good for Thomas enjoying his race and I’m sure Jessica would have been cheering him on. Hope you enjoyed your fancy dress party. Also hope you post photos of your outfit!
All those lasts are very emotional. Well done to Thomas for taking part, too many kids just wouldn’t want to join in. I don’t miss the year 6 productions, never emotional for me rather trying not to laugh at my kids grumpy input into the show. I look forward to seeing your fancy dress costume.
Those lasts can be so hard, can’t they! I’m glad Thomas enjoyed his sports day. I’ve always told my kids, it’s the taking part that counts. As long as they have fun along the way, nothing else matters. And Thomas did just that by the sounds of it.
I love the pic of the butterfly, we’ve had some really pretty varieties on our buddleia bushes. x
Oh you have summed up the end of summer term at school so well, so many lasts. Next year, after just 32 years, my Little Man will be last of my children to leave school! Of course I’m hoping he’ll go to college and Boo is looking to join a Kings Trust course. So, education continues but no more school. I love your photo’s Sophie is so talented she must make you so proud. And I love that Thomas enjoyed his sports day, I can remember those smiles too.
Ah the lasts are so bitter sweet arent they. One chapter is closing while another one is opening.
There’s a song by Brad Paisley called Last Time For Everything. All those lasts but many firsts still to come. Well done Thomas for his sports day, and to Sophie on her school production. There’s a lot of butterflies around at the moment, it’s nice to watch them
Sophie is such a wonderful child, she is thoughtful and dedicated. For her age, buying a gift like the one she did is a testament to how you are raising her. This was a wonderful weekly update.
All the lasts are bitter-sweet, as they are quite symbolic of the times changing and our children growing up. Yet there will be new firsts soon, and new milestones to reach.
Well done to Thomas on his sports day. And Sophie is always a star.
