Friday Focus 30/01/2026 – Settled

After all the ups and downs at the start of the year, things are feeling more settled at the moment. We’ve all settled into the current term-time routine and I’ve settled into my daily routine, managing to fit in a couple of walks with my walking group around work again. The mental load feels more settled and manageable as well. I’m enjoying it all while it lasts!

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Sophie in fifth position releve on pointe; Thomas with his hair in a ponytail; a greater-spotted woodpecker in a tree; hot chocolate with squirty cream and marshmallows in a mug; Hello Kitty themed waffles with strawberries and bananas; pink and peach flowers in a vase; a lake under a blue sky - "#365daysofgratitude 2026 week 4"

  • Day 23 – I am grateful that Sophie is making good progress in her pointe classes.

  • Day 24 – I am grateful that Thomas was happy that his hair is now just about long enough for a ponytail.

  • Day 25 – I am grateful for spotting lots of different birds with Thomas during our Big Garden Birdwatch.

  • Day 26 – I am grateful for hot chocolate with squirty cream and marshmallows.

  • Day 27 – I am grateful for waffles.

  • Day 28 – I am grateful for beautiful flowers.

  • Day 29 – I am grateful for a dry day for a winter walk.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Hearing that my great-niece has had a baby, which means that I’ve now become a great-great aunt! Being the youngest in a big family means that I’m closer in age to some of my nephews and nieces than my siblings, but it’s still strange to think that my nephew is now a grandad, my sister is a great-grandmother and my mum is a great-great grandmother!

  • A couple of mornings with beautiful blue skies – even if it did cloud over fairly soon afterwards.

  • Thomas letting me plait his hair for school.

  • Pretty daffodils in Jessica’s vase.

  1. Settled is good. I crave settled!
I was thinking the other day on one of my walks, maybe I need to start paying more attention to the birds!
    Those daffodils are gorgeous!

  2. I’m the youngest in a biggish family too and I have 5 great nieces and nephews. My eldest nephew is only 7 years younger than me and is a grandad. My line will end with me but I’m come to peace with that. I really fancy a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows now!

  3. I do like a settled week! Aw congratulations on the newest addition to your family . I do like a hot chocolate but I’ll let you have the cream and marshmallows!

  4. I am glad things are more settled for you and your family! It must be such a weight off your shoulders. Aww! How cute is Thomas’s hair and that looks like an amazing hot chocolate!

  5. Pleased things are feeling more settled. Love the flowers, so pretty (I’ve also got daffodils again this week). Wow, great great aunt. Even our eldest nephew at 27 still isn’t looking like having kids anytime soon, so none of our generation are yet great or grand anythings!

  6. How wonderful that things have felt more settled for you. January can be a difficult month, but writing about all that you are grateful for seems to really help.
Thomas’s hair is looking fabulous and looks super cool in a plait and a ponytail.
Well done to Sophie on the ballet progress.
The daffodils look beautiful in Jessica’s vase.
I hope February is a good month for you all x

  7. The flowers are lovely and plenty of positives this week, including that you are feeling settled. It is a very good way to feel.
Sophie is so talented and hard working, those pointe classes are not easy. Well done to her!
