Friday Focus 29/08/2025 – Theatre

Our last full week of the summer holidays has been bookended by theatre performances. Sophie had four performances of Bring It On on Friday and Saturday last week. I was backstage chaperoning for the show on Friday evening and then saw both shows on Saturday.

We weren’t sure how well Thomas would cope with seeing the show, so I booked for both the matinee and evening so that my husband could enjoy the matinee and I could take Thomas out if needed, as I would get to see it again in the evening. Thomas enjoyed the first half but started getting restless in the second half so we went out into the foyer so he could have some quiet space to spin around and re-regulate.

Thomas has had some lovely one-to-one time while Sophie has been busy rehearsing and performing at the theatre, but towards the end of the week, Sophie and I had some time together and enjoyed a trip to the theatre to see Tom Gates’ Epic Stage Show.

It’s been a busy year for Sophie with theatre. I’ve been catching up with sewing patches on her camp blanket and realised that we’ve added seven new show patches this year with the panto at the beginning of the year, two BYT productions – Made in Dagenham and Dexter and Winter’s Detective Agency, Energize and A Hint of Snow White with school and her dance school show.

We’re already thinking ahead to panto season with auditions coming up at the end of next month which have been advertised on social media and via email this week. Sophie was thrilled to see that she features on the audition ads for both the Compass Theatre panto and the Maidenhead panto. She had so much fun taking part last year. Fingers crossed she gets into the junior ensemble again this year!

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Sophie baking a cake; a chocolate cake decorated with Smarties; cakes on a table; Sophie and Thomas in the hot tub; the book Sophie made for Thomas; a solar system themed jigsaw puzzle; Sophie at the theatre for the Tom Gates Epic Stage Show - "#365daysofgratitude 2025 - Week 35"

  • Day 234 – I am grateful for doing some baking with Sophie.

  • Day 235 – I am grateful for birthday cake for breakfast to celebrate my lovely husband’s birthday. Sophie did a great job with baking and decorating his birthday cake.

  1. What a fabulous week you’ve had, full of so many lovely things.
Sophie has worked so hard this year, and you can tell how much she enjoys performing.
Happy belated birthday to your husband. I’m sure he enjoyed the cake, it looks delicious!
I hope Sophie is feeling okay about high school next week x

  2. Well done to Sophie for having taken part in so many productions over the year. That blanket is going to be full of memories in no time! And happy birthday to your hubby too. The cake looks fab. All the best for the new school term too.

  3. What a lovely week it sounds like. Hopefully the auditions for panto go well for Sophie. I don’t think I’ve ever managed to take a photo of dragonflies, they don’t stay still very often.

  4. Well done to Sophie with her performances! Good idea booking to see the matinee and evening show, it sounds like Thomas handled things well. What a proud moment to see her on the audition ads for the panto’s.
Happy birthday to your husband, the cake looks fab! x

  5. They can’t possibly hold the panto without Sophie after using her in their promotions. How lovely to see her face on those posters. Sounds like Thomas enjoyed what he could of the show, good idea to go back in the evening so you could enjoy the performance with your husband. It’s great how you split your time between the children and as a family.

  6. I love the theatre and often take the Little Man to watch the youth performances. I don’t think he will act himself though. Sophie is so talented, I hope she gets a part in panto.

  7. I love that you went out with Thomas. I see so many parents forcing their children to stay put for too long, when it’s too long for a young child to enjoy a performance. For me that’s respecting the child’s needs.
    Happy birthday to your husband.
