Friday Focus 26/09/2025 – Swimming

“Just keep swimming” as Dory sings in Finding Nemo – keep moving forward even when things are challenging. It definitely feels like this has been my mantra for September, in more ways than one.

I joined in with a fundraising challenge from Child Bereavement UK to swim 5km in September. I’ve been going swimming regularly this month to try and meet that target and this week I completed the challenge. As well as helping a great cause, it’s also been a good incentive to get a bit more exercise and I’m planning to “just keep swimming” now that it’s done.

The reminder to “just keep swimming” has also been helpful this month with all the various challenges and concerns that have been in the background. It was really lovely to be able to see my mum last weekend. We thought she was going to stay in hospital until her surgery but the wait for the surgery is a little longer than anticipated so she’s been able to come home in the meantime and we have a surgery date for early October. At the moment, she’s doing okay, which I’m thankful for.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Sunflowers in front of the sculpture of Jessica at her forever bed; Thomas hugging Nanny; Thomas playing the piano; Thomas at the entrance to a path through a hedge; baby Thomas with his godmother Denise; the activity log showing my completed swim challenge; washing on the line - "#365daysofgratitude 2025 - Week 39"

  • Day 262 – I am grateful for a beautiful sunny afternoon for spending time with Jessica.

  • Day 263 – I am grateful for getting to spend time with my lovely mum.

  • Day 264 – I am grateful for Thomas learning some new things on the piano and some good advice on how to encourage him with this.

  • Day 265 – I am grateful for getting to see Thomas’s classroom and find out more about how well he is settling in at junior school.

  • Day 266 – I am grateful for Denise, for her warmth and kindness, her friendship, her strength and support and for having been such a wonderful godmother to Thomas and so lovely with Sophie and Jessica too. A beautiful person inside and out who has been remembered with love by so many people today and who will be very much missed.

  • Day 267 – I am grateful for managing to complete my challenge to swim 5km in aid of Child Bereavement UK.

  • Day 268 – I am grateful for being able to get the washing out on the line.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Sophie and Thomas reading a prayer together so beautifully at the harvest service. They alternated reading each line and then Thomas turned to Sophie and said “Can we read this together? 1, 2, 3… Amen!”

  • Sophie having a half-day at school, due to the open evening, and being able to spend the afternoon with one of her new friends.

  1. Well done on completing the swim challenge!
I hope everything goes well with your mum’s operation. I’m glad she can be in the comfort of her own home while she waits.
It sounds like Sophie and Thomas are settling well at school. It’s nice to be able to visit the classroom and get a little glimpse of their day. I will miss that about primary school.
    Have a lovely weekend x

  2. Good job with the challenge and for a great cause too.

Hope your mum’s op goes well once it comes round.

  4. ooh congratulations on the swim challenge, it’s such a good form of exercise so I’m glad you are going to continue. We all have to remind ourselves sometimes to just keep swimming. I think you are doing great at keeping afloat. I hope your mum stays okay until she gets her surgery, it’ll soon come around and I hope she makes a good recovery afterwards
