Friday Focus 19/09/2025 – Drained

I’m feeling quite drained this week. It’s been a full-on week with juggling things, particularly with my husband working away for most of the week, and with things going on in my wider family. The word drained in white bubble writing

The weekend was a reasonably relaxed one. I’m thankful for that. I had a lovely brunch with a friend and it was nice to have a night out with my husband at the WOS quiz evening. We had a great team and came first which was an added bonus.

My mum got taken into hospital early on Monday morning with breathing difficulties. These were caused by an issue with her heart which she’ll need surgery for. She’s currently feeling much better but is still in hospital waiting to be transferred to another hospital next week for the surgery. It’s been one of those weeks when I wish I lived nearer. My husband being away has meant that I’ve not been able to get down to visit her as visiting hours start too late in the afternoon for me to be able to make it back for school pick-up. I’m hoping to visit tomorrow afternoon though. My siblings all live much nearer than me so have been able to be there with her and send updates, and I’ve at least been able to see her via video call.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Thomas's 'worm house'; the quiz trophy; Thomas lying on a chair at church with his back arched up and his feet on a table; a double rainbow; Thomas at the park; badges on Thomas's camp blanket; my activity log for my swim challenge - "#365daysofgratitude 2025 - Week 37"

  • Day 255 – I am grateful that Thomas enjoyed being back at Boys’ Brigade and had fun making a “worm house”

  • Day 256 – I am grateful for a lovely sociable evening at the WOS quiz and for a fantastic group of team-mates – between us we were well covered for most topics!

  • Day 257 – I am grateful for little moments that make me smile.

  • Day 258 – I am grateful for glimmers.

  • Day 259 – I am grateful for an after-school trip to the park.

  • Day 260 – I am grateful for some time to sit and chat while adding some new patches to Thomas’s blanket.

  • Day 261 – I am grateful for being three-quarters of the way to my target of swimming 5k this month in aid of Child Bereavement UK.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Being able to enjoy the time with Thomas in the hour between Sophie catching the bus to school and Thomas needing to leave for school.

  • Seeing how Sophie is improving with her leaps at ballet.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your mum, Louise. I hope she feels better soon. I can imagine not being able to visit has been hard.
I hope you can take some time for yourself this weekend after a draining week.
It looks like Thomas and Sophie are doing well in their activities. I’m not sure what a worm house is, but it sounds very cool.
Well done on the quiz win, it sounds like you had a fun evening.
Good luck with reaching your target for the swim challenge.

  2. Sorry about your mom. It can be so stressful when they are unwell and you can’t be there. But at least your family were nearby.

  3. So sorry you have felt drained, no wonder. You have had a lot going on! Sending love and hugs. I hope your mums surgery goes well and she makes a speedy recovery. x

  4. I completely know how you feel about your mum not being well and you being so far away. My mom is in Jamaica too, and Leisa went down to spend time with her. I’m thousands of miles away and must monitor the phone between work rotas. At least you had a lovely start to the week. Well done on the successful quiz team! Sophie’s ballet move is wonderful! She’s going to do amazingly well. All the best to your mom for the surgery and I hope you do get a chance to see and spend some time with her.

  5. Wishing your Mum a speedy recovery, I’m glad your siblings were able to help you keep in contact with her. Sophie is a very talented young lady! I hope you can recharge your batteries this week.
