Friday Focus 16/01/2026 – Difficult

This week has been quite a difficult one on the whole with various worries about things taking up a lot of space in my head. There are a lot of things going on around me at the moment – worries about family members with longer-term health concerns and issues, stressful situations that need dealing with, difficult conversations that need to take place and some sad news received this week too.

It’s been a week of poor sleep and waking up feeling anxious about what the day will bring. There’s not huge amounts I can actually do to help with a lot of it. I’m trying to provide support where I can whilst also trying to keep space to switch off and recharge but it’s been difficult.

There have been nice moments this week too. Within the LHBL household itself, things are fine. Sophie and Thomas have settled back into term-time routines again. My husband’s leg is much better and he’s been able to drive again. The hire car has heated seats and a heated steering wheel which has been very nice with the the cold weather! We’ve had some nice moments of family time together.

I’m very thankful for the support that I do have around me within my family, and from friends who are able to listen and be understanding even when I’ve been a bit prickly at times (I have a tendency to go into hedgehog mode when I’m very overwhelmed). And I’m trying to keep reminding myself that even though it does feel very overwhelming at times, there are lots of glimmers and moments when things do feel a little lighter. It’s not likely to get significantly easier any time soon, but I’ll get through it.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Me, Sophie and Thomas at the ice rink; a Transformer at the post-panto party; a storage bag filled with Christmas decorations; Thomas snuggled under a solar-system-themed quilt; a frozen bubble on frosty grass; a mug of tea and a plate with two mince pies; me having snuggles with Thomas on the sofa - "#365daysofgratitude 2026 - Week 1"

  • Day 2 – I am grateful for a fun afternoon taking Sophie and Thomas ice-skating. Thomas was quite nervous on the ice but managed one lap having a go at skating holding on to a penguin and then loved having Sophie push him around for the rest of the session.

  • Day 3 – I am grateful for a fun evening at the post panto party.

  • Day 4 – I am grateful for the storage bags I bought a couple of years ago for the Christmas decorations. So much easier to pack everything away and put it up in the loft than when we used to store it all in boxes!

  • Day 5 – I am grateful for warm duvets and quilts to snuggle under on a cold night.

  • Day 6 – I am grateful for fun making frozen bubbles before school.

  • Day 7 – I am grateful for a mug of tea and a couple of mince pies.

  • Day 8 – I am grateful for snuggles on the sofa before school.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Pretty ice patterns on the windscreen of the car.

  • Being back at rehearsals for the spring concert.

  • Animated discussions with Sophie after watching The Traitors together.

  • Sophie writing a letter for Thomas to leave out for the tooth fairy and reassuring him that she would still visit after he dropped his lost tooth and couldn’t find it before bedtime. The lost tooth has now been found and I’m sure there will be a return visit from the tooth fairy to collect it.
