Friday Focus 14/11/2025 – Back-and-forth

This week has felt like a fairly busy one with lots of going back-and-forth with the kids’ activities. There’s a fair amount of that most weeks, but there’s been more of it this week than usual.

Friday evenings tend to be our busiest evening with lots of back-and-forth. It’s a mad dash from Sophie getting back from school to get her out to her ballet class (taking her dinner in a food flask to eat on the way), then I have a 25 minute drive to take Thomas to Boys’ Brigade, drop him off, go back to pick up Sophie, turn around and head back to pick Thomas up from Boys’ Brigade, drop Sophie off at Girls’ Brigade, go home from a bit and then back out again to pick Sophie up again. Last week I thought it would be a little less crazy as we were staying for the Brigades’ firework display after picking Thomas up and then all going home, but it turned out that the Senior section were staying to welcome another Brigade company who were staying over for the Remembrance Sunday parade and so I still had to go back home for a bit with Thomas and then back out again to pick Sophie up!

Saturday thankfully was quite a lazy day, spending most of it at home other than a trip out in the afternoon for a walk around Black Park and some time in the playground.

Sophie and Thomas going down a slide together

Sunday was an early start to get Sophie to her dance festival (an hour’s drive away) as she had a couple of dances in the morning. We then had to drive back home again for her panto rehearsal in the afternoon, before heading back to the dance festival for her last section and the awards in the evening. It was also the first time having Thomas come along to the festival. I wasn’t sure how well he’d cope with it all, but he was brilliant.

I had an unexpected message mid-week from an old school friend who I hadn’t heard from in ages, and we had a little flurry of back-and-forth messages catching up with each other which was nice.

The rest of the week has mostly been the usual back-and-forth with school runs and after-school activities, although I’ve been out a little more than usual during the day with various meetings so it’s felt busier overall.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Fireworks at the Brigades' display; Sophie and Thomas at Black Park; Sophie holding her trophies with the adjudicator at the festival; Thomas reading his library book; a game of Cheeky Monkeys; a game of UNO; Black Park lake - "#365daysofgratitude 2025 - Week 46"

  • Day 311 – I am grateful that the rain held off for the Brigades’ fireworks display.

  • Day 312 – I am grateful for a lazy Saturday.

  • Day 313 – I am grateful for another fabulous festival for Sophie, coming away with four medals, a trophy and sash for placing 5th in Miss Inter Bright Star (11-12) and a trophy for highest scoring open tap solo.

  • Day 314 – I am grateful for library books.

  • Day 315 – I am grateful for some family games time before bedtime.

  • Day 316 – I am grateful for card games.

  • Day 317 – I am grateful for some outdoor time and calm moments in a busy day.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Catching up with some of the other cast members of Calendar Girls having been invited for tea at the hospice that we were fundraising for.

  • A Brainiac award at school for Thomas for trying really hard in Science and giving it his all.

  • Sophie’s lovely new (preloved) tap shoes

Sophie's new (to her) white tap shoes

  • Having my husband home again after his trip to LA.

  1. Oh wow! That is a lot of back and forth! It sounds like you have to be so organised. I can quite imagine you enjoyed having a lazy Saturday!
It sounds like Sophie is a busy bee and I am glad Thomas coped well at the dance festival.
    Fab photos!

  2. What a busy but lovely week you have all had. I’m glad you managed to find some pockets of calm amongst the busyness.
Well done to Thomas on his brainiac award, and Sophie’s new tap shoes look fabulous.
I hope this weekend is a bit more relaxing for you x

  3. That is a lot of logistics to deal with. Makes me relieved I’ve only got 1 to deal with. Well done to both Thomas and Sophie with their awards and prizes.

  4. I remember days like that, and sometimes I wonder how I managed. It was strange to have it stop so suddenly. We wouldn’t have been able to go anywhere on Friday evening though, the weather was so bad even the buses were flooding and the trains were not running. I love Sophie’s new tap shoes.
