Friday Focus 10/10/2025 – Jam-packed

Life certainly feels quite jam-packed at the moment. With less than two weeks to go until opening night of Calendar Girls, it’s been a busy week of preparations for the show, including a publicity event in a shopping centre and three rehearsals, including the first run-through of the show. My car is currently jam-packed full of props for rehearsals and will be staying that way until we get into the theatre a week on Sunday. I’ve also been baking scones which are one of the props for the show and have to be eaten on stage by a couple of the characters. And as well as all the preparations for our production of Calendar Girls, I also got to see a friend of mine play Chris in another production of Calendar Girls which was a fabulous production and I loved watching it.

The word 'jam-packed' in colourful bubble writing

Outside of the show, life feels jam-packed with various other things going on. We went out for a meal on Sunday evening as an early birthday celebration for my father-in-law which was lovely. My mum was due to have her surgery on Monday but it got postponed to Tuesday as there were no beds available. It was a huge relief that it went ahead the next day and all went well. She’s now back home and recovering well. Work has also been busy this week and there have been a couple of other things going on that have needed my support so my mental load has felt quite jam-packed too! But on the plus side, my husband hasn’t been travelling with work this week so has been around to support.

Sophie has started panto rehearsals for Sleeping Beauty and is preparing for the Year 7 singing festival at school next week. Thomas is coping very well with everything that is going on at the moment and seems to be really settled at school which is great. So far, I’ve been very happy with the support in place and the focus on what works well for Thomas. He even went running into school one morning this week which was so lovely to see.

What I’ve been grateful for this week:

Thomas's piano book on the piano; some of the cast of Calendar Girls singing at the shopping centre; Thomas holding his Duckling 3 swim certificate; a 3D printed 'colorball'; my mum smiling as she waited to go to theatre for her surgery; fruit scones cooling on a wire rack; a programme for Calendar Girls - "#365daysofgratitude 2025 - Week 41"

  • Day 276 – I am grateful that Thomas enjoyed having a piano lesson with Mummy.

  • Day 277 – I am grateful for a publicity event at the Chimes singing some of the numbers from Calendar Girls.

  • Day 278 – I am grateful for Thomas getting his Duckling 3 certificate at swimming today.

  • Day 279 – I am grateful for a 3D printed ‘Colorball’ which made Thomas very happy.

  • Day 280 – I am grateful that my mum’s surgery went well and she is now recovering on the ward. This was her waiting to go down to theatre and her positivity reminds me so much of Jessica and the way she was always full of smiles going down to theatre too.

  • Day 281 – I am grateful for a bit of variety from my usual baking – swapping my usual cheese scones for fruit scones for tonight’s run through of Calendar Girls.

  • Day 282 – I am grateful for a lovely evening seeing Shinfield Players Theatre‘s production of Calendar Girls.

Other things that have made me smile this week:

  • Getting out with my walking group and having some calming time in nature.

  • Sophie leaving me a lovely note on the whiteboard on the fridge.

  • Getting my monthly flower delivery.

White roses, purple brassicas and other flowers in a vase

  1. It sounds like you are having such a busy time at the moment. Good luck with the show, it sounds like it is taking up a lot of your time, in a good way of course.
I am glad everything went well with your mums surgery and that she is recovering well. I love the photo of her waiting to have the surgery, what a trooper. Sending love and hugs!
I’m glad the kids are happy and busy too. That is great news Thomas is so settled in school. x

  2. Scones as a prop sound wonderful to me! I don’t think anyone will complain about having to eat them.
Wishing your mum a speedy recovery.
That’s great news about the support for Thomas. It sounds like it’s helping a lot.
Good luck to Sophie in her productions, too; it sounds like she’s as busy as you at the moment.
    I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend x

  3. It does sound like a jam packed week, but also very exciting with your rehearsals and Calendar Girls almost coming around, plus Sophie’s panto. Well done to Thomas for taking things in his stride and it’s great your husband can be at home when it’s so full on. I’m pleased to hear your mum’s surgery finally went ahead despite the set backs and that she is recovering well. Don’t forget to take a bit of time to catch your breath and ask for help when you need it.

  4. There’s always so much going on with you and your family. Sounds like a lot of hard work but fun as well with the singing and rehearsals. Glad school is going well for Thomas, that’s always a worry, in particular when children have specific needs to work through. Also please to hear your mum’s surgery happened without too much delay. Hopefully her recovery goes well.

  5. Very busy and definitely jam packed. I’m so glad your mum’s surgery went well, she looks amazing! Good luck with all the rehearsals.
