Creating an autumn wreath – a simple preschooler craft

Autumn is such a beautiful time of year. I love all the colours of the leaves on the trees and finding acorn cups and shiny conkers. We’ve collected quite a few pretty leaves when out and about ready for crafting. When this month’s #BostikBlogger craft box arrived with some fabric leaves in pretty autumn colours, I thought we’d combine them with the ones we’d collected for a simple autumn wreath craft.

An autumn wreath made with colourful leaves, acorns, conkers and a pine cone - "Creating an autumn wreath - a simple preschooler craft"

You will need:

  • Cardboard (we used an old box)
  • Leaves (you can use fabric ones, real ones or a mixture of the two)
  • Conkers, pine cones and acorns
  • Raffia or string
  • Glue (we used Bostik White Glu)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • A plate or circular object to draw around

A plate. pencil, scissors, Bostik White Glu, autumn leaves, conkers, pine cone and raffia on top of a large piece of cardboard

1) Draw around the plate to make a large circle on the cardboard and cut out.

2) Draw a smaller circle inside the larger circle. You can either do this free hand or use a smaller plate.

3) Cut out the smaller circle, leaving the outer ring intact.

4) Use the glue to stick leaves, conkers and acorns all around the cardboard ring. Leave to dry, preferably overnight.

5) Make a hole at the top of the finished autumn wreath. Thread some raffia or string through to make a hanging loop and hang it up.

Sophie loved this craft. I cut the cardboard ring out for her and then she glued the leaves, conkers, acorns and “fairy hats” (acorn cups) on by herself. She was very happy with the finished result. It looks very pretty hanging outside our front door.

    1. I thought about using paper plates but I always struggle to get things to stick well on them. Hope you have more success with yours in activity hour!

    1. Thank you Nat, it was a lovely way to use up some of the “treasures” the girls have been collecting 🙂

  1. I just love autumn for all the fantastic crafting materials you can find. This looks like a lovely, independent draft for little fingers and one that we’ll definitely be trying! #KidsandKreativity

  2. We have done something similar in the past but our leaves weren’t as pretty as yours – you have some fab colours in there! #KidsandKreativity

  3. We love a bit of Autumn crafting. THe wreath has turned out really well! It looks really effective, yet simple enough for kids to do. Thanks for linking up with #KidsandKreativity, hope to see you back next time x
