Crafting with kids: paper plate flying saucer

Trips to space and aliens seem to feature strongly in the books that Sophie has been reading for her home learning recently. We thought it would be fun to do some crafting to go alongside them; to make our own little alien and a paper-plate flying saucer for it to travel it. This is a simple craft that would be suitable for children from preschool age upwards. Younger children may need a little adult help here and there.

You will need:

  • Two paper plates
  • A paper bowl
  • A clear plastic cup
  • Paint
  • Buttons
  • Pompoms
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Glue
  • Scissors

1) Paint the outside of the paper plates and paper bowls the colour you would like your flying saucer to be and leave them to dry.

2) Glue the paper plates together with the inside of the plates facing inwards (so the painted side is outermost).

3) Glue the paper bowl on top of the paper plates.

4) Glue buttons around the edge of the flying saucer.

5) Stick two pompoms together and add googly eyes and pieces of pipe cleaner to make your alien. You could also add pieces of foil to your alien. Ours even had a tiny pompom-and-foil ice-cream cone!

6) Cut the plastic cup in half. Glue the top half to the top of the paper bowl.

7) Put your alien inside the plastic cup on top of the flying saucer and put the bottom half of the plastic cup over the top to enclose the alien inside its capsule.

We had fun making our paper plate saucer. You could also try using glow-in-the-dark stickers instead of buttons on your flying saucer to make it “light-up” at night.
