#30DaysWild – Creating nature fairy wands

My girls love making fairy wands from sticks. They are so simple to make and far prettier than any fairy wand I’ve ever seen in a shop. Each fairy wand is completely unique and can be made in just a few minutes. Perfect for a little adventurer keen to create some fairy magic outdoors.

Two fairy wands made from sticks decorated with pipe-cleaners, roses, sweetpea, hawksbeard and leaves plus some fairy wings - "#30DaysWild - Creating nature fairy wands"

You will need:

  • A stick
  • A couple of pipe-cleaners (we like to use glittery ones)
  • Leaves, flowers and other natural items to decorate

1) Wrap the pipe cleaners around the stick.

2) Collect flowers and leaves and decorate the fairy wand by threading the stems underneath the pipe-cleaner. It is easier if the stems are long enough to wrap around the pipe-cleaner a couple of times to help secure them.

3) Keep adding flowers and leaves until your fairy wand is complete.

We’ve made these a few times and my girls love them. Last year Jessica had a fairy-themed birthday party in her Grandma’s garden and we encouraged her friends to collect sticks and then make themselves fairy wands. It was a lovely activity for them all to do together and everyone loved being able to take their fairy wand home with them along with a piece of cake instead of having a party bag.

We decorated our wands with roses, hawksbeard, sweetpea and a selection of different leaves. The flowers don’t last very long, but they look very pretty while they do! You can make the fairy wands with artificial flowers instead if you want them to last longer.

Jessica and Sophie had fun with their fairy wands out in the garden. We also made a couple of “dance sticks” by attaching pieces of ribbon to the end of a stick. Another simple idea that can provide lots of fun.

This year we’re taking part in #30DaysWild – a challenge from the Wildlife Trusts to get outside each day in June, do something wild and connect with nature.

    1. Thank you Nat, it’s such a lovely activity to do. I’m sure your girls would love it 🙂

  1. What a lovely idea. Mine would definitely use the sticks to poke each other with at their age but I can imagine for the older kids it is great. Such a simple yet effective activity with hous of entertainment after. Thank you for sharing at #familyfun

    1. My girls occasionally do that too but thankfully they’re mostly at the age of using their imagination now! 🙂

  2. These are super cute! I’ve seen nature wands before but never thought about how to make them. Pipe cleaners is very obvious! Looks like you are having fun with the #30dayswild this year. ‪Thank you for linking up to the #familyfunlinky‬
