#30DaysWild – Cooking outside: the first barbecue of the year

A sunny Sunday afternoon seemed to be the perfect opportunity for the first barbecue of the year. By the time we were ready to get the barbecue out though and start cooking, the sunshine had been replaced by some ominous looking clouds. A few minutes later, it started to rain. In true British fashion, we carried out regardless. We had decided we were going to have a barbecue, and we were going to have our barbecue whether or not the weather was on our side or not!

Thankfully, the shower only lasted a few minutes. We enjoyed the rainbow it left behind when the sun reappeared again.

Cooking on the barbecue is always hubby’s job. The kitchen might be predominantly my domain – the barbecue is definitely his. I’m more than happy to leave the cooking to him on these occasions.

The girls always love an opportunity to get the picnic blanket out and eat in the garden. I love taking time out to just sit outside as a family and switch off from everything. I’m at my happiest when the four of us are together like this. For a few moments, the stresses of work and daily life disappear. All that matters is that we are together, enjoying a meal and enjoying each other’s company.

This year we’re taking part in #30DaysWild – a challenge from the Wildlife Trusts to get outside each day in June, do something wild and connect with nature.

  1. How lovely. We also enjoy eating outside and have a table built into our decking to allow us to enjoy it. But we have hardly used it this year, definitely time to start!

    1. Having a table built into your decking sounds wonderful. We have very little garden furniture and I’d love to be able to eat outside at a table.

  2. Hi Louise, I love that carry on regardless attitude! Your girls look intrigued by the food, but hubby looks exhausted! If I attempted to cook something on the barbeque I wouldn’t be surprised if my husband started beating his chest like Tarzan…. Love the picnic blanket! I really should invest in one, beach towels don’t look the same.

    1. Thanks Debbie. Picnic blankets are great, we bought a few last year for a teddy bear’s picnic themed party and they’ve had plenty of use since then! 🙂
