25 things to do with kids during the summer holidays: our summer activity list

The summer holidays are nearly upon us. Six weeks of having both my girls with me all day. I’m looking forward to having that time with them. Last year we made a summer activity list for the first time. Having an idea of what activities we wanted to do together and what places we wanted to visit helped us make the most of the summer holidays.

Summer activities - some items on our list of 25 things to do with kids during the summer holidays

This year, we’ve come up with a new list of things we’d like to do over the summer. Some of them are things that we always do in the summer. Some of them, such as days out at theme parks, are more expensive things to do. There are plenty of free things on the list though. The girls can be quite specific in their requests. For example, Jessica has asked to make a unicorn horn. I’m going to have to get my thinking cap on with that one!

Here’s our list of 25 things that we’d like to do during the summer holidays:

1) Get the paddling pool out.

2) Watch the sunset.

3) Go to Chessington World of Adventures.

4) Make a unicorn horn.

5) Do a science experiment.

6) Play board games.

7) Look for fairies.

8) Water play.

9) Make a bird feeder.

10) Go to the beach.

11) Go to Legoland.

12) Bake cakes.

13) Make a grass trumpet.

14) Explore somewhere new.

15) Go to Peppa Pig World.

16) Make mud pies.

17) Make ice lollies.

18) Pond dipping.

19) Go to Chiltern Open Air Museum.

20) Read ten new books.

21) Follow a trail.

22) Grow sunflowers.

23) Go on the Gruffalo trail.

24) Have a teddy bears’ picnic.

25) Do some painting in the garden.

Last year we managed to do everything on our list apart from one thing, which was to grow sunflowers. I’m hopeful that we’ll manage to tick that one off this year as we’ve had more success with the sunflower growing so far.

There is a possibility though that another heart surgery may be on the cards for Jessica this summer. At the moment, we’re back in limbo again following last week’s cardiac clinic appointment. The team will be meeting again next week to discuss whether Jessica’s surgery should take place sooner rather than later. I’m acutely aware once again of the need to make the most of the here and now and enjoy the little moments.

For now though, we’ll focus on the things that we’re hoping to do over the summer and making memories together.

  1. Great ideas! We are growing sunflowers and have already been on the Gruffalo trail. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

    1. Thank you Sarah. I’m really looking forward to the Gruffalo trail 🙂

  2. Oh bless Jessica, how difficult to have that hanging over you and not being sure when it will be happening. We have also made a list for the summer, I’m hoping it will make us do a bit more and not get to the end of the holiday and wish we’d made the most of it.

    1. Thanks Nat. We found that making a list certainly helped encourage us to make the most it. Hope you enjoy working through yours! x

  3. Oh poor Jessica:( I hope you don’t have to wait long too find out. A summer list is a brilliant idea! I might pinch some ideas! Thanks for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday

    1. Thanks Lisa. I think it will probably be another week or so before we hear more but in the meantime I’m trying not to think too much about it and just enjoy the moment x

  4. Fantastic ideas. I think we will be doing a lot of these things over the summer too.
Poor Jessica. I hope you find out about the surgery soon. The waiting seems the worst part of it x

  5. It’s a lovely list and full of doable things too. We were playing board games today. We made them with a minibeast theme and then played them. Great all weather fun. I’ll look forward to seeing posts from some of your activities here, it looks like no one will be bored in your home this summer. #TwinklyTuesday

    1. Thanks Fiona. I love the sound of your minibeast board games – will look forward to reading about that! 🙂
