The futility of trying to catch up with blogmin

Hubby’s away and I swear the children have a sixth sense for when I have a huge list of things to do once they’re in bed. To say bedtime has been protracted is an understatement. I have been up and down the stairs too many times. By the time both kids are asleep, it’s way past nine o’clock and I’m exhausted. I know they’ll be up at six and I don’t want to stay up too late but there’s so much to do…

I don’t normally drink coffee in the evening but I need something to get me going again. I’m at the computer, one task down and I’m just getting into the swing of it when I hear the pitter-patter of little feet coming down the stairs. Jessica’s had a nightmare (at least I think she has – all she ever says if she wakes in the night and cries is “want cuddle Mummy.”) So back upstairs for cuddles. I’ll come down again when she’s asleep, I think, except there’s no sign of her wanting to go back to sleep. The cuddles are lovely, I’m trying to enjoy them but it’s now past eleven and there’s so much to do…

I’ll sit in bed and use the laptop, I think. I need to pop downstairs and get Jessica her night-time meds anyway. Having reassured her that I’ll be right back with some water and her meds, I head downstairs again. While the meds are dissolving, I switch off the computer and start turning lights off, accepting the futility of trying to work downstairs any more this evening.

Back upstairs, meds administered and Jessica’s tucked in bed next to me. Just being next to Mummy is not enough though. My plan to sit in bed with the laptop whilst hoping Jessica will just snuggle next to me and fall asleep is not going to work. I sigh, switch it off and resolve to just enjoy the snuggles instead. A pre-midnight bedtime will be good. Jessica is usually good to co-sleep with and doesn’t fidget too much but tonight she is restless. Fidget, fidget… It’s now past midnight and Jessica is finally drifting off to sleep. However, the coffee and mental to-do list combined keep me awake for a little longer. There’s so much to do…

I’ll get up early, I think. Five o’clock – that will give me at least an hour before the children wake up. Jessica asleep – check. Sophie asleep – check. I’ll just make myself a coffee, switch the computer on and oh… Good morning, children…!

Anyone else have days like these?

And then the fun began...

  1. Haha- I’m totally with you on this. I’ve got about 15 boring blogmin tasks to do (they are not post related hence totally boring…one day I will create tabs and put in a klout badge etc), so I will do anything to avoid doing them, a lot like avoiding your homework as a kid. I have even cleaned the bathroom before to procrastinate. Although normally I am just interrupted by little people! #twinklytuesday

    1. Lol, it is so hard sometimes to try and get the blogmin tasks done isn’t it? I’m still playing catch-up a week on!

  2. Yes totally! Sometimes I wonder what I’ve got myself into with this beautiful blogging hamster wheel haha #thetruthabout

    1. A hamster wheel is a very good description – it can feel a bit like that sometimes, can’t it?!

    1. Thank you – yes, it is fun too, that’s what keeps me going even if I do get snowed under with it sometimes! 🙂

    1. Definitely – I’m determined to try and catch up this week though – hubby’s back home now so hopefully will have more luck!

    1. Oh it’s so frustrating when you get days like that isn’t it? I’m gradually managing to catch up on some of mine!

    1. I know just what you mean – it is hard to find that energy once the children are asleep isn’t it?

  3. Bless you, I know the feeling all too well. I’m usually too tired after bedtime to write anything that makes sense and then get behind!

  4. Oh Louise! I feel like I have so little time to devote to the blogmin – I’ll try and write a post, line up the linky, etc. but there is just less and less time to be reading, commenting and replying to comments and when the kids cut into your little bit of free time it sometimes feel like you might as well just cut your losses and go to bed for sure! Thanks for linking up to #thetruthabout hon Xx

    1. It is hard to keep up at times – think it is also due to me being less willing to sacrifice sleep in order to catch up as well! Lovely to link up to #thetruthabout again 🙂

  5. Every blinkin Tuesday! So, everyone links up to Twinkly Tuesday on a Tuesday (well mostly they do anyway)_. Tuesday night, the other half is out at football (or tonight while not playing football, has met his mate at the pub). So, Tuesday is my main blogging night – the one where I have the whole evening to myself. It is also the night I have to pick up Zach from nursery, get home home, give him a snack, give him a bath and get him to sleep. Somehow, every week he fights Tuesday night sleep and like tonight, doesn’t fall asleep until 8.30. Then, I run downstairs, shove my pasta on and siot down to get a couple of hours blogging done and hoping he doesn’t wake up (he seems to roll around a lot on a Tuesday too!.). I swear that he knows it is the one night that I really need as many hours to myself as I can get! Thanks so much for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday

    1. I do think they have a sixth sense for those times when we’re hoping to get a good chunk of time to focus – mine always seem to be more likely to be wakeful if I have a deadline for something! Lovely to link up to #TwinklyTuesday

  6. Yes!! I have many days like this….It is so frustrating isn’t it…My girls always stay up and mess about when I have a lot to do….They just know! lol x

  7. I know what you mean about the admin mountain and also kids’ unerring knack of disrupting said tasks. Whenever my wife is out and I have an evening in on my own to catch up with blog stuff, you can pretty much guarantee that one of the kids will wake up with a nightmare or something similarly disruptive, They definitely have a sixth sense!

  8. Oh dear. My tot is still too small to get himself out of bed, thankfully. I go into work at least an hour early every day just to have some peace and quiet to catch up with things.

  9. Gorgeous photos of your little ones. You must be absolutely exhausted. I realised that I was adding to my sleep deprivation by getting too caught up in blogging ( I don’t earn any money from mine, so I can’t really justify it) so I stopped doing quite so much and am trying to actually go to bed by 11pm. Easier said than done most nights – more often than not I am on twitter until midnight. x

  10. Going from the other comments, you are so not alone Louise! There’s always something to do, isn’t there. Somehow, I manage to do it all without coffee and carry on in a caffeine-free haze! #thetruthabout

  11. I stopped trying years ago to get up early to have some time to myself. I could get up at 3:30 in the morning and within 10 minutes they would all sense that I was up and stumble downstairs to find me…

  12. This is my life Louise!!!! I literally sit down to do some commenting and hear ‘MAMA!!!’ — or the door goes — or the phone rings…. there is never a little bit of ‘quiet time’ to catch up with everything!! But would we have it any other way??! 😉 Thanks so much for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday — hope to see you again next week! x

  13. Oh yes! I have so many days like this at the moment and so much blogmin and post writing to do. I never seem to be able to get ahead of myself for long blogging-wise and it’s so frustrating! xx #TwinklyTuesday

  14. This doesn’t happen quite as often now that my girls are older, mostly because they are able to recognize and communicate what’s wrong, but I do look forward to some day sleeping 6 hours or more at a stretch. #TwinklyTuesday.

  15. Yes -We do have days like those – we also have ridiculous bedtimes go on…. and on…. and on. I have to revise for my driving test next week but blogging is so much more appealing!

  16. Oh yes I have days / nights like this. However I’m not as strong as you in the resisting sleep department – I am so impressed you got up at 5 am to blog!!! It is so hard as there are so many ‘bits’ to blogging – as well as the writing – the promotion, engaging with others etc. it’s exhausting. But lots of fun of course. I just wish there was more time to actually do it all!
